A Meeting with Justice William O. Douglas

Robert Allen, Jr.

[Reprinted from Equal Rights, date not recorded]

Bob Allen, Jr. recently commented on this incident in his Georgist career:

"I am reminded of my own visit with the late Justice William O. douglas. I was then the Director of the Washington, D.C. Extension of the Henry George School of Social Science. As the Director, I was asked to present him with a copy of the 75th Anniversary Edition of Henry George's Progress and Poverty. But I seized the opportunity to discuss the threats posed by Senator Joseph McCarthy and Communism and I shall never forget his reply. He turned to his window in thought and then again to me and said: 'Young Man, only a better idea like that of Henry George will stop McCarthy or Communism.'"
