The Public
[1898]
The Public first appeared in April of 1898, edited by Louis F.
Post. During its first year of publication, one of the major political
and economic issues facing the United States was whether the United
States constitutionally was empowered to add to its sovereign territory.
War with Spain erupted in Cuba. The U.S. now had a military presence
in the Hawaiian Islands and in the Philippines. The Public covered
these events each week, as well as many of the major and minor public
policy issues the nation faced.
