A
BRIEF HISTORY of Georgism in Norway |
- "Georgism
came to Norway in the late 1880s, largely due to the efforts of
Viggo Ullman. As a public movement it was weaker in Norway than
in Denmark, and has few if any political successes to show for
itself. Mainstream economists were unimpressed by Georgist
claims. But the important political debates about the so-called
concession Laws (1906-1920), touched on themes where Georgists
had much to say. The Concession laws laid down the terms on
which foreign and Norwegian corporations might acquire property
rights to natural resources, especially waterfalls and mineral
deposits, which were vital to electricity generation and to
heavy industry. (According to those laws, waterfall rights were
leased to users for 100 years at significant fees, payable to
the local authority, after which rights revert to the State.)"
