will be a representative from the National Party. Other speakers who will talk

to look after the defectives and unfortunates, but they want to get back behind
the causes of pauperism and insanity; and in nine-tenths of the cases these result
from bad laws. It is this wish to help that makes
us long for the ballot."

can ultimately better their condition, and Mr. George's plan is
one of the least objectionable means of that
character."

Brown, Willie L. |
California
(San Francisco) |
- 1998 - Comment on by Stanley Sapiro.
Reprinted from GroundSwell, January-February:
"San Francisco
Mayor Willie l. Brown, Jr. got his start in politics by
defeating a dedicated follower of Henry George, Edward Gaffney,
for his Assembly seat. But Brown, too, embraced the Single Tax
idea, and introduced a bill calling for local options on
exempting buildings from property taxes. He became an
all-powerful Speaker of the California Assembly, after which he
became somewhat cool to Henry George's ideas. Possibly, this was
related to his law firm's getting such unexpected clients as the
Southern Pacific Railroad Company, the biggest landowner in the
State (owning over 2 million acres)."

- 1914 - Introduction to the
Single Tax,
in Single Tax: Debaters' Handbook Series.
Quote:
"It is very recently,
indeed, that political eocnomists have thought it within the
proprieties to devote much attention to Single Tax discussions.
This explains why so much of the available printed matter on
Single Tax has been written by Single Tax propagandists, and so
little of the meager literature of opposition by the economists."
