Ernest B. Gaston was born in Iowa in 1861. He graduated from
Drake University in Des Moines, and a few years later purchased a small
newspaper. During this period he read Henry George's book, Progress and
Poverty and began to hold discussions on the book. In 1893 he recruited
a group of colonists to establish an utopian community on Mobile Bay in
Alabama, organized under the principles of cooperative individualism. This
new community was named Fairhope.
