"Henry George Ell,"
Land & Liberty, July, p.93:
"The death is announced at Wellington, New Zealand, of Henry George Ell, who was Postmaster-General
in that Dominion in 1912. He was a member of the House of Representatives for twenty years, and was largely
responsible for the removal of the condition that a majority of the electors on the roll must vote affirmatively
before local rating of land values could be adopted by a municipality, and substituting for that a simple
majority of those actually voting. He was a faithful friend of our work. Before his election in 1899 he was
closely associated with the writer in the agitation to increase the classes of minor local rating authorities
entitled to adopt the rating of unimproved land values for raising their revenues.

"The
principles of Henry George are being kept to the fore in New
Zealand by energetic and enthusiastic Single Taxers who are
doing good educative work. While only a comparative few are

great mass of theprople are ripe for reform on our lines. It is
only timidity of want of moralcourage thatkeeps many from active

- 1880 - Letter, to Henry George from
Auckland, 27 January. Quote:
"I
have already read a large part of the book, 'Progress and
Poverty'. I regard it as one of the ablest works on the great
questions of the time which has come under my notice. It will be
of great use to me. It has cheered me much to find that there is
so able a man working in California upon subjects on which I
believe the whole future of mankind now mainly rests."
- 1882 - Address, before the New Zealand
Parliament. Quote:
"I saw enough
there (in Ireland) to give a bias to my mind forever as to the
necessity for change and reform. It was really from a desire to
find relief from that misery that I went to Australia. In all my
walks on deck in my first voyage, my mind was filed with the
thought of what misery there was in the world, the hope there
was in the new lands, and the greatness of the work of
attempting to do somehting for the hopeless poor. The efforts to
get land made by single individuals seemed to me a wrong to
humanity. To prevent such a monopoly in the new countries has
been my life work ever since."
- 1888 - Letter, to Henry George, following
George's visit to New Zealand. Quoted in Charles Albro Barker (Henry
George, 1955, p.314):
"You
have expanded a spark into a blaze of thought and unselfish
conceptions which is spreading to every part and ennobling
countless minds."
- 1955 - Comment by Charles Albro Barker
(p.314):
"'Progress and Poverty'
he regarded as one that surely 'would be of great use' tohim.
'It has cheered me much to find that there is so able a man
working in California, upon subjects on which I believe the
whole future of mankind now mainly hangs."
