"There are grave
defects in the system. The owners of land and capital receive in
general just about what their property or their services are
worth to society. But this does not work out fairly in many
respects. Land is essential to life and extremely limited. It
automatically increases rapidly in value with growth of
population. The payment for it is not for services but merely
for ownership. We reach a stagewhre a very large share of the
total income is going to people who produce nothing. They merely
hang on to land and receive an unearned income from the toil of
those who work."

Carter, Weld Saunders |
New Jersey Pennsylvania
Illinois (Chicago) (Antioch) |
FAMILY BACKGROUND PROVIDED BY WYN ACHENBAUM:
Archie and his wife Jessie,
active at HGS NY, became lifelong friends
of my grandparents, and Archie loaned my father the money that let him start college;
sometime after WWII, they divorced; Archie went to HGS in Boston, Jessie to HGS in
Chicago. All stayed in touch and visited back and forth. Marjorie died in 1963, and
in 1964, Weld married Jessie. In the 1970s, there was a conference at Bryn Mawr or
Harcum JC outside Philly, and Weld and Archie both attended. I don't know when it
was that Jessie and Weld discovered that their grandmothers had been dearest friends
in Chatham, Pittsylvania County, Virginia. Jessie's father grew up with Weld's
father, and they both went to Brooklyn about the same time, sometime in the 1890s.
Weld's father deserted the family in 1907, and Weld learned more about his father
from his aged 2nd father-in-law than he'd known in his first 64 years!

"In 1910 the Single Tax Club prevailed
upon the citizens of this city to try a slightly modified single tax, taxing
real estate, land and buildings for ocal revenue, despite the fact that our
State constitution say: 'Taxes must be ad valorem equal and uniform
on all kinds of property'. We started by taxing land 50 percent of its value
and buildings 25 percent. Our opponents,
the landowners, carried us into the courts and four years later the supreme Court
decided against us. Our citizens got together, appointed a committee, had a meeting
with the landowners committee, and came to an agreement to allow us to continue if
we taxed land at 75 percent and buildings at50 percent of full value. Under this we
are operating to-day, and we can say without fear of contradiction that our city
and county have outgrown any other section of our great State."

the way people look at it. Almost nobody sympathizes with the landless,
